Preparing for the Flood

The story of Noah and the flood can be found in Genesis chapters 6 through 8.

Who?

All the people of the earth, including "giants" (Gen 6:1,4-5; 7:23)
God/ the Lord (Gen. 6:5-7 first reference only - He is throughout the story)
Noah (Gen. 6:8-9 first reference only - he is throughout the story)
Noah's family:
Only three of Noah's children: Shem, Ham, Japheth (Gen. 6:10; 9:1)
Noah's wife and the wives of these three sons (Gen. 6:7,13; 8:18)
All kinds of animals of the earth and sky.
Seven each of "clean" animals used in sacrificial offerings and birds (Gen. 7:2-3)
Two of each other kind - one male, one female for procreation.

What?

A great flood that covered the entire earth (Gen.7:4, 17-24)

Why?

1. Why did God destroy creation and mankind with a flood?

The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.
The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.
So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” Gen. 6:5-7 NIV

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. Gen. 6:11-12 NIV

2. Why did God save Noah and his family?

But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. (Gen.6:8-9) NIV

When?

Approximately 1,556 years after the creation of the earth (timeline found in Gen. 5) until 1,657 years (Gen. 8:13-14,18)

Where?

The whole earth (Gen. 7:17-19)
Mount Ararat (Gen 8:4)

How?

1. How did God flood the world?

It rained continuously for forty days and forty nights. (Gen. 7:4, 11-12)
The "fountains of the deep were broken up" - the underground water supply was cracked open so that water gushed up from the beneath the surface. (Gen. 7:11, 17-20, 24; 8:1-5, 9, 13-14)

2. How did God save Noah and his family?

God told Noah to build an ark (Hebrew tebah, tay-baw'  literally "a box") and gave specific dimensions and details concerning its construction and preparation for its use. (Gen. 6:13- 22)
A "cubit" is approximately 18 inches.
Noah's family and the animals were the only ones to enter the ark and be saved.
